Wine Decanting Tips & Tricks
Decanting ensures that wine sediment in the bottle does not end up in your glass. Wines that are not fined or filtered can have some sediment. Decanting can also help aerate wine, enhancing the aromas and flavors. Here are three tips to pour like a pro:
- Stand the wine bottle upright for up to 24 hours to allow sediment to fall to the bottom. Choose a decanter large enough to give the wine plenty of room to breathe.
- After removing the capsule and cork, wipe any sediment from the inside of the bottle neck using a clean cloth. Pour the wine slowly and steadily into a clean decanter until the sediment approaches the bottle’s neck. Watch the neck carefully for sediment.
- Timing is key. For older red wines, you want to decant longer, while white wines typically no more than 15 minutes. Young wines without sediment like it rough and need to unwind.
