Mushroom & Wine Pairing: Three Tips
Mushrooms pair perfectly with wine. They add the umami flavor that mimics the rich, meaty flavors of animal proteins. The perfect wine to pair with a mushroom-based dish should complement both the wine and the mushrooms. Here are three tips for a great pairing.
- Mushroom Type – Mushrooms vary in flavor, intensity, and texture. Consider the type of mushroom when choosing the appropriate wine pairing. The delicate, sweet taste of a black trumpet could pair with an earthy Grenache.
- Cooking Method plays a significant role in pairings. Creamy mushroom dishes might pair best with a medium-bodied red wine, such as Pinot Noir or White Burgundy. In contrast, a grilled portobello mushroom, with its earthy, robust flavors, will pair better with a hearty red wine like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, or Petite Sirah.
- Additional Ingredients lend to the flavor profile and should be considered when pairing wine.
